50 years of expertise, learning and development
Our history
TOMRA was born of an innovation for returning empty beverage containers in 1972. In a small shed in Asker, Norway, brothers Petter and Tore Planke created a solution to a problem: a local grocer wanted a machine that could quickly and easily take back empty bottles and issue a receipt for the deposit refund. This was the beginning of TOMRA.
By the end of 1972, TOMRA had installed 29 machines in Norway. The success of these machines soon aroused interest abroad. In 1973, TOMRA signed several distribution agreements for markets in Europe and the USA.
TOMRA's internationalization process took off in earnest in the early 1980s. Subsidiaries were set up in the Netherlands, the USA, Denmark and Germany. TOMRA grew at a lightning pace.
Canada entered the game in 1984, when Mr. Ernest Martin, a businessman from London, Ontario, began distributing TOMRA reverse vending machines in Canada after seeing the machines on a trip to Europe. The first installations are made in Ontario for the return of glass bottles. Quebec enters the game at the end of 1987, with reverse for aluminum cans.
In 2001, TOMRA Canada also began processing the material at its Baie-d'Urfé offices.
Today, with over 100 employees, TOMRA Canada is a leading supplier of automated reclaimers and equipment for the collection, sorting and processing of returnable containers across Canada.
